Sue G. Woody of Bassett, Virginia passed away on May 11, 2017 at her home. She was born February 20, 1926 in New Market, Virginia to the late Benjamin Guard and Maurine Swinford Guard. In addition to her parents, Sue was preceded in death by her husband, C. L Woody, Jr.

Prior to her high school graduation in 1943 from New Market High School, Sue was a member of the Aircraft Warning Service, which was a civilian service of the US Army Ground Observation Corps instated during WWII. Trained in enemy aircraft recognition, she volunteered her time as an aircraft spotter. Sue attended Westhampton College of the University of Richmond and graduated with a BS degree in 1947. Following her graduation, she married C.L. Woody, Jr. and they settled in Bassett. She was a member of Reformation Lutheran Church in New Market and has attended Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church since 1947.

Susie, as she was known by her friends, was a dedicated homemaker during her children's growing years. She and C.L. spent time traveling the world, fulfilling their own version of a bucket list long before that became popular. She was an avid reader, bridge player and master cook who loved to entertain family and friends in her home. She loved animals, especially dogs and birds. She enjoyed playing card games and taught her children and grandchildren her old favorites and continued to play those with the family as recently as Christmas. Her daughters and grandchildren shared many happy memories with her over the years from sledding triple down Pocahontas Trail during her daughters' teenage years to taking long boat rides to join the family for lunch out on Smith Mountain Lake as recently as the summer of 2016. She maintained a playful spirit throughout life, even getting one of her grandchildren to set up her phone ring tone to the tune of "You Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dog."

She is survived by her two daughters, Beth Woody (Randy) of Greensboro and Korrel Kanoy (Bobby) of Durham and grandchildren, Matthew Yardley, Ben Kanoy, Leigh Kanoy, Zachary Woody and Emma Yardley and great-grandchild, Sawyer Woody.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 13, at 3 p.m. at Pocahontas Bassett Baptist Church. The family will receive friends before the service beginning at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Mountain Valley Hospice at 18981 Jeb Stuart Highway, Stuart, VA 24171 or to the Bassett Public Library, 3969 Fairystone Park Hwy, Bassett, VA 24055.
